About

An independent directory, built to be useful

ToolBeacon exists to answer one question well: which software should I use for this specific job? Everything else on the site serves that.

Why this site exists

Software discovery is broken in a specific way: the lists are long, the claims are unverifiable, and the pricing is usually out of date. You end up opening twelve tabs to answer a question that should take five minutes.

A directory only helps if it is honest. That means recording what a tool does, who it suits, and where it falls short — and saying plainly when we have not checked something. Every listing here shows whether pricing has been verified, and empty fields stay empty.

We are not affiliated with the products we list, and we do not accept payment for a favourable review. If that ever changes, it will be labelled on the page and in the disclosure.

How a listing gets published

  1. 1The tool is filed against a task-based category, not a marketing tag.
  2. 2The official website and core capabilities are recorded from the provider’s own pages.
  3. 3Strengths and limitations are written by an editor, not generated from a template.
  4. 4Pricing stays marked unverified until someone has actually re-checked it.
  5. 5The record goes live only when the publication status is set to Published.

What we will never do

  • Invent ratings, review counts, or “tested by” badges.
  • Publish prices we have not verified, or imply a free plan where none exists.
  • Rank a tool higher because an affiliate programme pays more.
  • Use AI to write product claims and present them as research.

Something wrong on a page?

Pricing changes and features get renamed. If a listing is out of date, tell us and we will re-check it — corrections are the most useful email we get.
